1. Introduction to Needle Flame Tester

Aneedle flame testeris a specialized fire safety testing instrument designed to simulate small flames generated by fault conditions in electrical and electronic equipment, such as short circuits, component overheating, or poor contact. It is used to evaluate the ignition resistance, flame spread, and self-extinguishing ability of materials and components when exposed to such small flame sources. The tester utilizes a standard needle-shaped burner to apply a controlled flame to test specimens, providing accurate and reliable data for product development, quality control, and compliance certification.
The core components of a needle flame tester include a needle burner, temperature control system, timing device, test chamber, and safety protection mechanism. The needle burner, with a specified diameter and length, uses fuel gas (usually butane or propane with a minimum purity of 95%) to generate a stable flame of fixed height and temperature. The temperature control system ensures the flame meets standard requirements, while the timing device records key parameters such as flame application time, after-flame time, and glow time with high precision.

2. Core Applications

Needle flame testers are widely used in industries where fire safety is a critical requirement, especially in fields involving electrical and electronic equipment, materials, and components. The main application scenarios include:
● Electrical and electronic industry: Testing of electronic components (relays, capacitors, connectors, transformers), insulation materials (wire and cable insulation layers, insulation paper, insulation sleeves), and product enclosures (shells of household appliances, chargers, and power adapters). This ensures that these components do not ignite or spread flames when encountering small fault flames, preventing fire accidents.
● Transportation industry: Evaluation of flame resistance for interior materials of automobiles, high-speed rail, and aircraft, such as seat fabrics, dashboard plastic parts, wire harness insulation layers, and battery pack enclosures. The closed space of transportation vehicles requires strict flame resistance to reduce fire risks and ensure passenger safety.
● Building and construction industry: Testing of interior decoration materials (plastic wallpapers, ceiling materials, floor coverings), electrical installation materials (conduits, wire troughs, switch panels), and thermal insulation materials. This helps prevent fires caused by local small flames such as wire short-circuit sparks from spreading rapidly.

● Household appliances and consumer electronics industry: Flame resistance testing of components for white goods (washing machines, electric ovens), black goods (televisions, audio equipment), and small digital products (mobile phones, laptops), including shells, internal wire insulation, and control panel enclosures.

3. Compliance Standards

Needle flame testing is carried out in accordance with international and industry standards to ensure the accuracy and comparability of test results. The main applicable standards include:
● IEC 60695-11-5:2016: This standard specifies the needle flame test method, including apparatus, confirmatory test arrangements, and guidance. It broadens the scope to simulate small flames from both inside and outside equipment, and defines requirements for fuel purity, burner design, and test procedures.
● IEC 60695-2-2: An earlier standard that has been partially replaced by IEC 60695-11-5:2016, still referenced in some regional and industry applications.
● Other relevant standards: Depending on the industry and region, additional standards may apply, such as UL 746A for plastic materials in the United States, ISO 3795 for automotive interior materials, and GB/T 5169.5 for electrical and electronic products in China.

4. Test Principle and Procedure

The needle flame test simulates small fault flames by applying a controlled flame (with a height of 12 mm ± 1 mm and a temperature rise from 100℃ ± 2℃ to 700℃ ± 3℃ in 23.5 s ± 1 s) to the test specimen at a 45° angle. The test process includes specimen preparation, flame calibration, flame application, observation, and data recording.
Before testing, specimens are conditioned in a standard environment (temperature 23±2℃, relative humidity 50±5%) for a specified period. The flame is calibrated to meet standard parameters, then applied to the specimen’s surface or edge for a set time (usually 30 seconds, customizable). Testers observe whether the specimen ignites, the duration of after-flame, and whether dripping materials ignite the underlying silk paper and white pine board, to assess the material’s flame resistance.

5. Product Advantages

Our needle flame tester is designed to meet international standards and practical testing needs, with the following features: high-precision flame control to ensure stable and consistent test conditions; intelligent data recording to automatically capture key test parameters with an accuracy of ±0.1 s; flexible test programming to support single or consecutive flame applications; and user-friendly operation with a large LCD touch screen and optional remote control. The test chamber is made of high-temperature and corrosion-resistant materials, with an independent exhaust system to ensure operational safety and long-term service life.

6.Customer FAQ List for Needle Flame Testers

(1)What kind of samples can be tested?

It can test plastic parts, electrical components, connectors, insulation materials, and small finished products used in electronics and appliances.

(2)Is the machine easy to operate?

Yes. Most models are designed for simple and user-friendly operation. The operator can easily set the flame time, test time, and other parameters.

(3)Do you provide installation and after-sales service?

Yes. We usually provide operation guidance, technical support, and after-sales service. An English manual and remote assistance are often available.

(4)What gas does the needle flame tester use?

The tester usually uses butane or propane gas, depending on the model and test standard requirements.

(5)Can the flame time be adjusted?

Yes. The flame application time and other test settings can normally be adjusted on the control panel.

(6)Is the test process automatic or manual?

Most modern needle flame testers are semi-automatic or fully automatic, which makes testing easier and improves consistency.

(7)How is the test result judged?

The result is usually judged by observing the afterflame time, afterglow time, and whether the sample or surrounding material ignites.

(8)Is calibration required?

Yes. Regular calibration is recommended to ensure the flame height, angle, and test timing meet the required standard.
